THE STORY OF SURVIVOR
Early in 2002, wine lover, marathoner runner and triathlete Jeff Wigbels met winemaker Squire Fridell and became a Laird of Clan GlenLyon, (Atlanta Branch).
In late 2006, the very day before the Wigbels second child was born, Jeff was struck with the totally unexpected news that he had a deadly form of late-stage, non-smokers lung cancer: specifically stage 4, non-operable, non-small cell adnocarsonoma. He and his family were devastated.
When Jeff notified Squire that he wouldn't be drinking any wine soon and asked to put his Clan Membership on hold, Squire sent him his gratis shipment anyway with a note telling him to put the wine on display on the mantle... as an incentive to fight, every single day, and survive.
In the same way Jeff has always approached life, he became pro-active, seeking answers and treatment from the best physicians and cancer experts our country has to offer. Jeff traveled to Houston to the MD Anderson Cancer Center to begin a revolutionary new cancer targeted therapy program. His individual cancer genes were isolated, the specific proteins were identified down to the molecular level, and treatment began, specifically attacking those proteins with a new kind of precise drug therapy developed at MD Anderson.
Jeff's progress could be called nothing short of miraculous and in September of 2008, the cancer's metastasized tissues and the mothership tumor had shrunk to virtually half its size, enough so that Jeff was given the OK to stop drugs and treatment. Jeff and his wife celebrated that night with a glass of GlenLyon wine from the mantle and the seed for the idea for SURVIVOR was born!
Jeff has since created "The Wigbels / Dr. Herbst Lung Cancer Research Fund" with 100% of the funds raised going directly to MD Anderson's scientifically acclaimed research, now aptly named "Battle".
In honor of Jeff and his family's courageous battle with cancer, the wine SURVIVOR was created by Jeff's friend, Squire Fridell. It is a wonderful blend of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grown and made into wine by Squire at GlenLyon Vineyards & Winery in Sonoma Valley.
There were only forty cases of SURVIVOR produced from the 2008 vintage.
For every single bottle of SURVIVOR purchased, twenty dollars will be promptly sent to The Wigbels / Herbst Lung Cancer Research Fund.
